When I was pregnant with my first son, I started looking for a newborn photographer right away. I don’t know why maternity portraits weren’t on my radar, but they didn’t even cross my mind! Looking back, I am sad I didn’t document that pregnancy with more than iPhone selfies. Being pregnant is a life-changing experience that lasts for nearly a year of a woman’s life. You’re growing a real live human being- that needs to be documented!
My friend Emily contacted me this Autumn about taking a few maternity photographs of her and her daughter. As a fellow photographer, she knows the value of documenting this stage. Emily was excited about taking photographs of her pregnancy as well as documenting her last month with her daughter as an only child.
We met during the golden hour at the Codman Estate in Lincoln, Massachusetts. This timeframe can sometimes be tricky for three year olds but Emily’s daughter was a photographer’s dream! She ran, played, kissed her baby sister, and hugged mama’s belly. Emily looked like a pregnancy model in her long skirt and adorable jean jacket. She was squatting, hopping over rocks, and climbing hills like a rockstar. The Codman Estate is such a perfect venue for photography because of its varied backdrops. There is the mansion, a beautiful field, gorgeous old fields, and even an Alpaca family which is always a hit with kids! We got lucky with a beautiful sunset and a warm October evening.
